Tradescantia spathacea, commonly known as Oyster Plant or Moses-in-the-Cradle, is a striking tropical plant admired for its bold foliage and compact, architectural form. Native to southern Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean, this hardy species adapts well to indoor environments and shaded outdoor settings. The plant features stiff, sword-shaped leaves that grow in tight rosettes, with deep green upper surfaces contrasted by rich purple undersides, creating a dramatic two-tone effect. Small, delicate white flowers occasionally emerge nestled within boat-shaped bracts at the base of the foliage, giving rise to its distinctive common name. With its sculptural form and vibrant colouring, Tradescantia spathacea adds texture and visual contrast to interior plant arrangements, contemporary indoor landscapes, and tropical-inspired planting schemes.
