Carnegiea gigantea

Saguaro Cactus

Height | 12 - 15 meters

Carnegiea gigantea, commonly known as the Saguaro Cactus, is an iconic desert species renowned for its towering form and distinctive branching silhouette. Native to the Sonoran Desert of North America, this remarkable cactus has become a symbol of arid landscapes and xeriscape design. The plant features a tall, columnar trunk with prominent vertical ribs that create strong texture and visual rhythm, while mature specimens develop upward-curving arms that contribute to its instantly recognisable appearance. Its sculptural form makes it a striking focal point in landscape compositions, particularly within desert, contemporary, and drought-tolerant planting schemes. During the warmer months, the Saguaro produces large white flowers near the tips of its stems, adding seasonal interest and ecological value. Carnegiea gigantea typically grows to around 12–15 metres in height, with exceptional specimens reaching even greater heights over many decades. With its bold architectural character and enduring presence, the Saguaro Cactus introduces structure, scale, and a distinctive desert aesthetic to landscape and architectural drawings.
