Opuntia, commonly known as the Prickly Pear Cactus, is a distinctive succulent plant admired for its sculptural form, drought tolerance, and striking desert character. Native to the Americas, this species is widely used in arid landscape design, xeriscaping, and contemporary planting schemes for its bold architectural presence and low-maintenance requirements. The plant is characterised by flattened paddle-shaped stems that grow in layered clusters, creating a unique silhouette and strong visual texture. Depending on the species, it may also produce vibrant yellow, orange, red, or pink flowers followed by edible pear-shaped fruits. Opuntia typically grows to around 1–5 metres in height, depending on the species and growing conditions. With its dramatic form and resilient nature, the Prickly Pear Cactus introduces structure, texture, and a distinctive desert aesthetic to contemporary gardens, courtyards, and landscape designs.
