Macropus Rufus

Red Kangaroo

The Red Kangaroo (Macropus rufus) is the largest living marsupial and an enduring symbol of the Australian outback. Native to arid and semi-arid regions across central Australia, this powerful species is known for its long, muscular hind legs, large feet, and long tail used for balance. Males are typically a rusty red colour, while females often appear greyish-blue—both with short, coarse fur and large, upright ears. Red Kangaroos are built for speed and distance, capable of bounding across open landscapes at high speeds and covering vast distances in search of food and water. Herbivorous and mostly active in the cooler hours of dawn and dusk, they graze on grasses and shrubs. Social and adaptable, they often form loose mobs and remain an iconic fixture of Australia’s wildlife and identity.
