Dromaius Novaehollandiae

Emu

The Emu (Dromaius novaehollandiae) is Australia’s largest native bird and the second tallest bird in the world after the ostrich. Flightless yet fast and powerful, emus are found throughout most of mainland Australia, from open plains to woodlands and scrublands. They are instantly recognisable by their long necks, strong legs, and soft brown plumage, which helps them blend into the dry landscape. Emus can sprint at speeds of up to 50 km/h and use their powerful legs not only for running but also for defense. These curious and resourceful birds are omnivorous, feeding on plants, seeds, fruits, and insects. Uniquely, it is the male emu who incubates the eggs and cares for the chicks after the female lays them. Emus are an enduring symbol of the Australian landscape and are featured on the country’s coat of arms alongside the kangaroo.
